- "What an awful sad place, wish I'd read some reviews before we booked!" (7/19/07)
- "In one word - disgusting. This was the worst place I have ever stayed. Just a nasty, filthy place." (3/7/07)
- "This hotel should be CONDEMNED!!" (2/24/07)
- "This place looks and smells like a geriatric ward. There is nothing 'Grande' about this dump!" (2/6/07)
- "You truly have to stay at the Nevele to realize that the testimonials on this website are in no way, shape or form an exaggeration. What a dump! Perhaps the biggest insult to the $650 for 2 night charge is the $15 charge for racketball. Also, my shower curtain had more mold than most French cheeses." -R. Panzer (8/24/06)
- "They ran out of towels and there was no hot water...how is that for Grande?" -M. Rooks (6/14/06)
- "We arrived on Friday night and left on Saturday morning because of the filth -- everywhere, multi-legged creatrues walking around in my room, no heat and a "too bad" response from "management," food which makes hospital food look like a 5-star restaurnant, and a sense that the people working there really don't care about the place or the guests." -5/11/06
- "There is nothing "grande" about the Nevele! There were holes in the carpet, and a doorknob had fallen out of a door. There were cobwebs in the buildings." -5/10/06
- "Words do not describe how terrible everything was from the condition of the room to the condition of the facility and even how aful the manager treated us. The grounds were very unkept. I had a massage one day and they took me, a female, into the mens locker room to have my massage. We were on the third floor and the elevator sounded and acted so terrible that we walked up and down 42 steps all week. Everyone staying there seemed to be very upset. There was no heat and then when we finally got them to turn it on it was very very hot and the rooms could not be controlled. We finally gave them a 2 day notice that we were leaving but when it came time to check out they refused to give us our last day back that we had paid for and were extremely disrespectful to us. It was like "take us to court and see if we care." After getting home we looked at the pictures and read about the Nevele on the internet and could not believe how they could doctor pictures and tell their story. Please, think before you go." -5/5/06
- "I recently attended a confrence that was being held at the Nevele Grande...If it wasn't for my interest in competing we would have the left the minute we saw the conditions of our rooms. We payed $225 for one night, and it seems as if it went straight down the drain. For dinner on our first night we got three tiny chicken fingers that were probably from Burger King and then microwaved to a crisp, and breakfast the next day was watered down eggs, greasy bacon and disgusting fruit. The entire hotel smelled of mold and mildew and the dining room smelled of urine! To anyone interested in going there don't--it's not like the website advertises it at all." -Kayla 4/5/06
- "The hallway of a Vacationer wing smelled like urine. The meals were disorganized, and the quality of food was poor. For the price they are charging, you can go to a much better resort." 3/3/06
- "The Nevele Grande Resort & Country Club was by far, the worst hotel I ever experience. What was suppose to be a ski weekend getaway, turned out to be a weekend to the prison camp. This very old, dilapidated building is in serious need of remodeling. The entire hotel was dirty; had dirty linen with blood stains on the sheets upon check-in; wash cloths were loaded with pubic hairs; drug paraphernalia was found in the bathroom upon check-in; the restaurant served undercooked or overcooked food; the building was without heat and hot water for 24 hours; the staff, including the general manager was very rude, unprofessional and unconcerned; some guest rooms have huge cracks in the window panes; housekeeping was off duty the entire weekend; clean wash cloths, towels and linen were not available the entire weekend; the hallways were covered with mold, dust, dirt, soda & water bottles, and trash; poor lighting prevented females from walking alone on the premises." 3/3/06
- "I stayed at the Nevele Resort this past weekend (2/24/06-2/26/06). I first want to say that the pictures on display on the catskills resort web site are misleading. The current state of the hotel is horrible. I stayed in the Vacationer. There was mildew behind the faucet on the bathroom sink. The carpet was stained. When I pulled back the blanket there was hair on my pillow. I covered my other pillow with a spare t-shirt to sleep on. There was no ice machine or vending machines. We did not have hot water until the last day." 3/3/06
- "This was by far my worst hotel experince ever. I have been giving ski trips for a couple of years and this was my first time using this hotel I can honestly say I have never been so disgusted. First of all the building we stayed in(the Vacationer) had no staff. There was not heat in most rooms. Also no hot water. When called about the hot water we were told to heat it up in the microwave that the rooms did not have. The rooms smelled horrible the bathrooms had shower curtains hanging on by two to three rings. There were nasty spots all over the carpet. Housekeeping cleaned the rooms and took all the bathroom linen and did not replace with clean linen. The food was also terrible and none of the staff spoke english. I hope that this helps anyone to make a sound decision to never use this hotel." 2/28/06
- "The hallways smelled. The whole 'resort' has been neglected. Think twice about vacationing here, I never will again" -2/15/06
- "Our weeekend was a disaster! Upon checking into our room, we looked up to see our ceiling leaking heavily. We went to the desk to inform them of the leak and to change our room and the answer we were given was "well, it's raining outside". When we looked around the hotel, we found leaks in the lobby as well as other spots. But, after all... it was raining. When we raised our concerns regarding the many changes we noticed since our last visit, we were told that if we were not happy, then we did not have to return. We will definitely be taking their advice." -2/14/06
- "The food was unsatisfying, there was a huge red stain on one of the bedsheets and the toilet was clogged. Everything was old fashioned and broken." -1/27/06
- "My husband and I went to the Nevele Grand for the New Year's Weekend as we have for the past 15 years and were terribly disappointed. So much has changed, from the quality of the food to the music and entertainment, that we would compare our stay to pulling teeth. We will not come back and recommend that our friends don't either!" -1/10/06
- "Because our car was damaged from hurricane Wilma, I was forced to cancel our reservation . Mike Shawn, the manager, told us we would not get a refund under any circumstance. Thanks Mike for your sympathy and for keeping our $200!" -1/9/06
- "The mattress I slept on was infested with mites and I am now covered with these unsightly bed bug bites that will not respond to any over the counter itch medicine...I've demanded my money back." -12/29/05
- "Would never go back and would try to convince many people I know who book the Nevele to find another hotel." -11/11/05
- "What a shame!!! Went to the Nevele Grande Resort with a fairly large group in November and what a shame. It lost everything nice about the old Catskill nostalgia. And more then just the need of a total renovation, its staff is no longer the same either. Being the group leader I have never dealt with more ignorant, and nasty people in my entire life." -11/9/05
- "This place gets worse evey year. It is an absolute disgrace. With the exorbenent amount of money that we are charged every year you think some improvements would be made. This year the smell of mold was so overwhelming it was nauseating. Finding roaches crawling on our table at dinner time (check under your bread basket!!!!) was absolutley horrid." -10/24/05
- "This hotel was mediocre at best. When we got there the power was out for nearly 3 hours! Some of the things were pretty dirty and moldy and the windows were pretty dirty. There was a pool of water in one part of the hotel on the floor for the whole time we were there. They had a tunnel which was wet and nasty, the carpet was completely saturated with water in some parts." -10/16/05
- "Places like the Nevele, which were not built to high construction standards and are now 50 years old, are good candidates for a complete teardown and replacement." -9/30/05
- "I would not recommend this hotel. The management has a total disconcern for their customers." -9/22/05
- "The food: disgusting. The staff: frightening low-level mobsters. The overall decor at the Nevele was cheesy 60's nouveau riche; once luxurious shag carpets with stains all over them, ugly brass and fake crystal chandeliers, bad impresionist paintings of the great outdoors that would have made Bob Ross cringe with embarassment." -9/20/05 Editor's note: That's the Nevele, alright. We wouldn't make this up.
- "Absolute misrepresentation of the hotel/resort. The place is awful and the advertising is totally misleading. They should be sued. Don't stay at this hotel, period." -9/12/05
- "I should have known the minute we got there the smell of mold was everywhere. The lobby, the halls, the rooms-everywhere. The food and service was awful. Be very careful if you choose to come to this place, you are risking your health by staying there." -9/9/05
- "Lots of empty areas and places. Would not advise you to leave your kids to wander the hotel. The Stardust Room (entertainment room) smelled like a urinal. Moldy and dusty as well. The whole hotel smelled like mold. It smelled like it was rotting." -9/6/05
- "I couldn't believe how low they could get. Hot tub broken, cockroaches in the games areas, service rude. Will never return." -9/6/05
- "This is a dirty outdated disaster. The help were unable to supply our needs and our families couldn't wait to leave. The food was mass produced and at times uneatable. I am amazed this place has any return visitors. We will not make that mistake again." -8/26/05
- "The people who write GOOD things about this place must be paid by the owners. It's old, dirty and unkept...." -8/19/05
- "The carpet in the room was extremely stained and the bathroom was deplorable. There was so much soap scum and mildew in the shower I wanted to wear my flip flops in case of athletes foot. Towels that came to us were stained with black and grey mold. The overall smell of the entire place is gross. It is a moldy and mildewy smell." -8/2/05
- "Everything is broken or in very bad shape in this place but the worst is the service. The staff just don't care and the management is ignorant." -8/1/05
- "This facility should not be referred to as a 'resort.' It is like a run down university dorm complex from the 1960's. The musty smell upon entering the main building was very pronounced. You could actually smell this outside of the building as you walked by. The level of maintenance of the property was below even minimal standards. The elevators were had scratched fake wood arborite walls, marked with graffiti." -7/28/05
- "Unbelievable! How is this place still in business? It clearly has not been renovated since the 1970's and even then was probably broken. Much of what is advertised is broken or not offered anymore, the food is disgusting and caused stomach ailments, our keys to our rooms never worked, the "hot tub" never got over 80 degrees, the pool tile is literally falling off into the pool, the towels being offered to guests at the pool were MUDDY, the place is teeming with dirty old men making open comments about females, and the rooms were foul. Pink and Black tile in the bathrooms was bad enough ..but the mildew and fungus on the grout put me over the edge!" -7/25/05
- "The entire complex was permeated by a musty/moldy odor." -7/23/05
- "The nevelesplash website is incredibly misleading. This place must have been it in it's day, but today, it is run down and in big need of renovation. Each lobby of the different hotels has limited lighting, the furniture smells and it completely outdated - think 70's. The carpets are disgusting inside and outside of the different lobbies." -7/6/05
- "This place was THE worst hotel experience of my life. I didn't just check out and leave at the end - I fled!! Horrible food (frozen I think) along with unctious and rude staff made 'dining' a trip! Rooms looked like they were last renovated in 1960's. The ONLY reason to go to the Nevele is just to see how bad, bad can get." -6/17/05 Editor's note: We really wouldn't recommend that. Really.
- "The place was a total dump. My advice is stay away." -5/16/05
- "The whole place was old, moldy and boring. The pool looked ok from far but it looked like no one checked it. Take my advice stay away...." -5/27/05
- "First sight at entrance to our lobby was overflowing garbage cans. Interior finsishes worn. Elevator of 3 story building had keypad for floors 7, 8 and 9? What was the white/yellow powder all over the mini golf? Doors had room numbers in ballpoint pen. Cat walked right over my head on a steam pipe. Food was abysmal and service was non-existent. Bed had hair on pillow before use; never unpacked car. Left in middle of night." -2/24/05
- "At the end of the pool is an "old" rock waterfall or garden, clearly revealing mold, yuck! Simple things like cleaning..not present. Dont expect it." -2/21/05
- "I stayed in the Vacationer, and this place needs to be bulldozed down, and rebuilt. It's not just old, but almost unsafe. Very poor maintenence, no accomadations for handicap, decor from the 70's (I mean the actual cheap stuff, kept over the years). The owners of this establishment should be ashamed at the place. Low budget from the Sign welcoming you there, to the musty, mildew carpets you'll walk over when you leave." -2/15/05
- "The food was garbage, no amenities worth speaking of. I would never, never, go back again." -2/14/05
- "First off that place is old and moldy grody and disgusting. I agree with the review 'pure ripoff,' if you plan to stay at the Nevele Grande dont forget your bug spray for all the ants and your fly swatter for the cockroaches..." -12/3/04
- "The buildings are falling apart with noticable cracks and worn out carpeting. The staff is pretty much a joke with no one able to give any decent information about activities. But beware of the other guest that go here. The people who go to this resort are the scariest looking people I ever have seen in one place." -9/5/04
- "iUnder pass - The worst!! haha I feel so bad for whoever has a room down there. It was nasty, mold everywhere, broken beds, unsafe!!! Service - Took REALLY long. Play area - HORRIBLE. Very cheap equipment." - 7/24/04
- "This was the worst weekend that I have ever had. I booked the top category room - the Empire Wing. I was told this was the best room in the Hotel. Although the room was quite large and roomy, the room smelled of mildew. The bathroom was also a nice size but old and disgusting and needs to be totally redone. The brown water coming out of the pipes didn't help either. I spoke with the Chambermaid the next day and she told me that the room I was staying in has had leaks in it for over 6 months! The only thing GRANDE about this Hotel was the PRICE!" -7/14/04
- "Once we entered our room in the Vacationer, we immediately noticed the funky mildew odor that had lingered in the hallway as well. The poorly lit room also fell far below expectations with outdated decor, cheap Ikea style furniture and drab colors. There were cigarette burns in our carpet too. Our room reminded me of a Motel 6 room. Eventually, we decided against staying and checked out of the Nevele a few moments later. Save your money and time, go somewhere else!" -6/28/04
- "Last February I took my family for a weekend to the Nevele Grande Hotel. What a mistake! Things went from bad to worse. Check in was a disaster, the front desk people are basically teenagers that don't have a clue what they are doing. The food in the dining room was horrendous. The hotel itself is run down and falling apart. My room smelled of mildew and when I wanted to change rooms the front desk person informed me that she needed to get authorization from a manger, and there was no manager there to help me. All in all the staff is unhelpful, unintelligent and downright mean. I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone!" -6/24/04
- I cannot believe this place! It needs to be condemed already. How do you go around advertising all of this wonderful stuff you claim to offer and then not deliver. Go to the website, then go to the Nevele, you'll see what I mean. The place is awful it kind of reminded me of The Shining. Dirty, staff is nasty, entertainment is TERRIBLE, the food is awful not to mention the room rates are WAY over priced! Trust me, save your money, DO NOT STAY THERE!! If you are curious and go anyway, please stop back and post your experience, I would love to hear your horror story!!" -5/28/04 Editor's note: Again, we wouldn't recommend it.
- "OMG... This place is the worst!! The management is extremely unprofessional and the staff truly follows suit! You want to talk about rude! The entertainment was terrible and there activities were the worse, Bingo with cards that were falling apart. Mini Golf? Sure no problem if you like sewer water dripping on your head! The ceiling was actually leaking toilet water. Like to swim? No problem if you enjoy swimming in a swamp. It is beyond me how the board of heath does not close these folks down. Trust me, DO NOT EVER STAY IN THIS HOTEL!! IT IS ABSOLUTELY A NIGHTMARE!!I lasted a half a day and immediately checked out." -4/11/04
- "The Nevele Grand is one of the reasons why the hotel industry in the Catskills died. This hotel is a living example of poor service. From the inept front desk clerks, to activities that were offered and did not exist, this place is a classic example of How Not to Run a Hotel. Common areas around the hotel were full of mold and mildew as was our room. The people posting positive thoughts about this hotel must be living in an alternative reality!Last thought: don't go to the Nevele Grande!" -2/18/04
- "I would never, ever recommend this hotel. The main desk staff were unhelpful, and the common areas and hallways were frequently dirty and/or so old they looked hazardous." -1/20/04
- "This place is nothing short of disgusting. Possibly the worst part of all, assuming you have a nose, is all of the various and putrid stenches, which pervade each room, including the dining room. The food is not only seriously unappealing, but hazardous as well. The place is rundown, moldy, seedy, and disgusting (the ceiling drips, the carpet and furniture are stained) the staff is unhelpful, the odors are unbearable, and the food service is extraordinarily hectic and slow." -12/27/03
- "I didn't see anything 'Grand' about the entire hotel! Possibly in its day early 50's it might of been a Grande Hotel, but by todays standards-NOT!" -12/11/03
- "This place was nowhere near worth the money paid. I find it hard to believe a huge place like this is able to stay afloat. And if this place has been 'renovated', I can't imagine what it looked like before. The lobby furniture was dirty, stained and, since I had to sit down, it was uncomfortable too. The beds didn't have mattress pads on them and I am wondering how long it will take for the maid to find my message written in the dust! The whole place had a weird smell to it too. Then there was the mold growing on the ceiling in a hallway, visibly fuzzy, and the puddles of water accumulating on the floor in one part of the tunnel area. We took a short walk Sunday looking for the horses and came across the 'dumping ground.' All kinds of broken furniture and garbage just kind of sitting there in various piles. I guess I could go on and on about the disappointments. But I don't want to spend any more time on this unpleasant experience." -11/12/03
- "The place is smelly, dingy, dirty and unfriendly. I do not advise booking a vacation here." -10/30/03
- "Our recent family vacation at the Nevele Grande was a 'grande' disappointment. Upon arrival the first thing we noticed as we walked into the lower lobby was a strong smell of urine. Our family was booked in the tower on floors 6 and 8. The rooms on the 6th floors were damp and mildewed with an awful smell. The air conditioning in the rooms was hit or miss. The dining room was extremely hot and the meals were rushed from beginning to end. The promise of a coffee shop to go to after the nightclub was an empty one. The outdoor pool, though olympic sized, was filthy and in need of a good cleaning." -8/9/03
- "The smell on the 6th floor was horrible half the people are now sick from it. Food was ok but the air didnt work proper in the dining room and they rushed you threw your dinner and breakfast. Was told cafe would be open after shows they weren't. I could go on and on but I wont just dont go its not good." -8/8/03
- "From the moment we walked in we noticed a terrible odor in the lobby as well as in some of the rooms. The lobby smelled like cat urine and the rooms and hallways reaked of mildew. The air conditioning in the rooms didn't work and when we called for a repair man he said it was on as high as it could go. The dining room also had no air conditioning. The outdoor pool needed to be cleaned. There was bugs and leaves floating all over the pool. I couldn't even stand being in such a dirty pool. The game room, ping pong room and mini golf rooms need to be renovated. They were dirty and there wasn't any staff in any of these rooms to help if needed. These rooms looked like nobody has done anything to fix them up in years. The ceiling of our room looked like there had been a leak and there was a water stain on the ceiling and the paint on the walls were peeling off. The couch bed that we had was terrible. When laying in it springs stuck in your back." -8/8/03
- "Lobby, nightclub and tower rooms smelt like mildew. Family members came home with upper respirtory infections and there allergies at there peak. The dinning room had no air condition that all the waiters were dripping in sweat. You had 1 hour to eat breakfast or dinner. Food portions were small. I advise you to take your vacation elsewhere!" -8/8/03
- "Terrible place falling apart and the staff very very rude. My room door was broken, look like it had been kicked in several times and lighting in walkways and hallways very dim and some missigng. Room was not clean upon arrival. Not some place I would like to take my family to for a vacation." 4/30/03
- "Conditions are seedy, no hot water, found 2 hairs in my salad, food is hard to find between 5 and 7, meals are rushed and servings are small, wait staff acts like they are doing you a favor by feeding you, check in isn't until 3:30. grounds are ill kept. Would never go again." -10/30/02
- "Everything... except the outdoor pool and tennis courts, were falling apart. It seemed that nobody cared anymore about the look of the place." -6/18/01
